How much sleep do you need before a tournament?

Sleep needs vary from person to person. Some need only four hours per night, but others seem to need 10. Some people complain because they sleep "only" five or six hours each night. Yet many of these people awake rested in the morning and function well during the day. Five or six hours of sleep is all they need most of the time. So there's no solid rule on this, just depends on your lifestyle, habits, and so forth.

The recommended dosage of sleep according to "experts" is about 8 hours of sleep.

Experiment to find the amount of sleep you need. Whatever you find to be your "tournament sweet spot" will take a little bit of practice. I generally like to get about 6 hours of sleep before a big event, but if you're Hacksaw76 you'd say that you don't need sleep ... you can stay up all night and still win Hardcore!
